101 Days of D&D: self homework assignment #1 (Actions and Attacks of Opportunities)

I warned you about posts like this! Friday night’s session revealed a couple of real shortcomings in my knowledge of the rules of 3.5e. So, my homework before next session is to get down a solid understanding of the following:

  • Actions: what’s a movement action, what’s a full action, what’s a free action, etc. — you get the idea.
  • Attacks of Opportunity: strongly related to actions. I just don’t always get what provokes an AoO and what sorts of actions (little-a action) can be A0Os.

Tomorrow’s post is more meaty. I promise!

  1. Along with the grappling rules (which I’m amazed didn’t make your list! ;)), AoO’s are easily one of the least intuitive things about D&D 3.x.

I’ll be interested to see what you come up with in terms of ways to tackle these shortcomings.

  2. Grappling didn’t make the list because I’m not ready to… wait for it… grapple with that problem… yet. I’ve got to work up to it. :)

As for AoO, yeah, totally non-intuitive. We had a not-short discussion about how stupid it is that drawing a weapon is a movement action that does NOT draw an AoO. I may have to fire up the House Rules Engine on that one. :)
