This is what Scott McCloud was talking about!

Spiders (an e-sheep comic) is a great representation of what cool stuff you can do online with comics. It’s an interesting, high-tech alternate history of the Afghan war. Part 3 is especially cool in its presentation. Part 4 is forthcoming. Go now and read.

Then, send Patrick S. Farley some cash via the handy PayPal links. I’m transferring some money to my PayPal account now, so I can send some to him. I’ve donated to several online publications and software developers lately. It makes me feel good, paying for stuff that I use and/or enjoy. It’ll make you feel good, too.

The “iPhone”?

Posted on 20 Aug 2002 · tagged · comments off

The NY Times ran a story in which the author thinks Apple will be launching a phone/PDA combo sort of deal in the not-to-distant future. He cites some Jobs comments and the new connectivity (bluetooth, iCal, AddressBook, Sherlock) in OS X 10.2 as his evidence. Sure, it’s circumstantial, but it’s still compelling. Such a device would simplify my life (iPhone = cellphone + palm, plus the synching capabilities with OS X, which I run at home and at work). Also, Jobs had the CEO of Cingular Wireless at MWNY this year, and Cingular is my wireless provider (well, it is for the next 10 months at least, the remaining time on my contract), so hopefully Cingular would be suporting such a device. As Cartman would say, “Schweet.”

UPDATE: The Register has a contrary opinion that Apple will just be working closely with folks like SonyEricsson to support their tricky new smartphones.

Brad Choate MT plug-ins

Posted on 17 Aug 2002 · tagged · comments off

Brad Choate has a pile of cool-lookingMovable Type plug-ins. I’m way behind the curve on all the groovy stuff people are doing with MT. It’s amazing how this blogging tool has really taken off in the 10 months or so it’s been around. When I volunteered to beta-test it last fall, I just thought it seemed like a cool little blogging tool. I didn’t anticipate actually using it (I was planning to roll my own in php). Ben and Mena have really created something amazing with MT, and not just the tool itself, but the community of users and developers that has sprung (sprang? springded?) up around it.

Wil got cut

Wil Wheaton got cut from Star Trek: Nemesis. That’s too bad. As much as Wil is sort ambivalent about his whole ST experience (and what it’s done to his career), I was looking forward to seeing Wesley Crusher ride again, if just for a bit of closure.

I hope that footage (apparently, they cut 48 minutes) shows up on the DVD release, since that’s what DVDs are for.

Kung-Log

Kung-Log is a swank OS X AppleScript app that allows you to post to and edit entries in a MovableType-powered weblog. It’s a really nifty app from the coder of the great Kung-Tunes app. If you use OS X and Moveable Type, grab it, use it, then send him some cash! We need to support people who create good, useful software.
