Mac O’Reilly

It’s great to see that O’Reilly is really jumping on the Macintosh bandwagon with a number of books and web resources related to Macintosh programming and development. I also like their use of dogs as the animal for Mac stuff, because it reminds us of Moof! the dogcow and because their Macintosh section has a Boston Terrier on it, and I grew up with a Boston (and my parents have another one now).

Back from Phoenix

I’m back from my two-day trip to Phoenix to speak at the NAA Newspaper Operations SuperConference 2002 (what a mouthful). My panel was the most interesting I saw (and the only web-related panel), though my presentation was a bit stiff and disorganized. It happens to me every now and then, and it sucks. I think part of the problem was my ambivalence about the topic I was specifically asked to speak on and which I grew more ambivalent about between early October (when I was invited to speak) and now.

Sambo R.I.P.

Revolutionary architect Sam “Sambo” Mockbee died on December 30, 2001, from complications of leukemia. Mockbee’s Rural Studio at Auburn University’s School of Architecture pioneered affordable and innovative housing. He was a visionary, and he will be missed. Here’s hoping that the Rural Studio lives on despite his loss.

The Waterboys

The Waterboys were one of my favorite bands once upon a time. I recently rediscovered their ’89 album, Fisherman’s Blues. Wow. It’s such an amazing album. If you like moody rock with a Celtic folk swagger to it, you’ll LOVE this album. “We Will Not Be Lovers” still chills me.

This guy makes furniture out of Macintosh cartons. I love Macs, but I don’t think the furniture looks too comfortable. The rhino, however, rocks.
