Viva Las Vegas

So, I’m headed for Vegas (by way of a three-hour layover in Dallas, plus the two-hour time loss) next Monday for a few days. If anyone knows of a good sushi restaurant in Vegas, drop me line here. Otherwise, I figure I’ll gamble a bit and work most of the time. I won’t have a car (I’ll travel by taxi), so I can’t really explore except what I can do on foot. That’s a shame, really, because Vegas should have some awesome mid-century modern architecture I’d like to at least drive by (though it’s no Palms Springs in that respect, I hear). Still, gambling will be done, sushi will be eaten. It won’t be ALL bad.

So, I’m watching TV last night, and one of those somber, black with white dissolving text ads about the terrorist attacks comes on. I hate them. I don’t care how well-intentioned they are, they’re still an attempt to make consumers think: “Hey, these guys feel bad about the terrorist attacks; let’s eat their sandwiches/drink their beer/fly their airline/whatever is being advertised.” Then the icing on the cake: the ad (and I can’t remember which, I was so appalled) said something like “…our nations time of mourning…” Anybody see anything wrong with that? If you’re going to rush an ad to market (or whatever it is you do with an ad) to take advantage of terrible thing, at least PUNCTUATE THE DAMNED THING CORRECTLY! The sad thing is probably that I was the only one who noticed it. Sometimes having an English degree (or two) is a terrible burden.

For those about to rock…

A few weeks ago, I went down to visit my parents because my sister was in from Kentucky, and I only get to se her a couple of times a year. My parents have done some remodeling and cleaning out of closets, and my mom made me a big pile of boxes then said, “Either take it home with you, or it’s going into the trash.” So, I brought it home. Included in that (along with notebooks from highschool and college, the journal I kept the first time I went to San Francisco, and a bunch of music on vinyl) was a box full of 80s heavy metal (and lite metal) tapes. I was Mr. Big Hair in high school (well, junior high and the first couple of years of high school, until I made a sudden transition to punk and indie rock), and I relived it a little over the weekend by listening to those cassettes: Ratt, Dokken, Motley Crue, Dio, Def Leppard. It rocked. Really. I’m embarrassed to admit it. Then, on the way to work, I flipped through the classic rock station and they were playing Dio’s “Rainbow In the Dark,” one of my favorites from that period. It still rocks (though in a cheesy, 80s metal by short guys named Ronnie sortof way).

Fall is falling!

As I write this, the temperature has dropped from about 82F or so this afternoon to down around 50F and is projected to hit 42F here tonight, with a high tomorrow of only 68F! Why must I write about this? Because I HATE hot weather. Actually, I don’t much care for winter or summer either one (though I prefer Winter if I have to make a choice). I like the transitional seasons. I like change. Well, sometimes, anyway. In any case, I’m glad fall is here.

Cheap Airfares

Apparently, the airlines are slashing ticket prices to woo scared customers back to airtravel. My flight to Vegas on 10.1 is only going to be $247 roundtrip. That’s about half of what it would have cost just two weeks ago, since I’m flying from the hinterlands to Vegas with no connecting flights. (hat tip to Cam for that article)
