I’m re-learning how to use

I’m re-learning how to use Mac OS X the last few days. When the final release came out in April(?), I got it and installed it on my work machine. It slowed me down too much, though, so I quit using it. Now that the WebSTAR V beta is out, though, I’ve got another OS X test machine up and running so I can get that beta up and running and try to work on compiling MySQL and PHP to work with it. If I can have the ease of administration of WebSTAR (and, supposedly, better security out of the box and better speed than Apache), I’ll use it instead of Apache, mainly due to a lack of time to learn Apache. I really want to get PHP installed and running with WS, though, because I want to migrate our stuff away from WebCatalog to PHP/MySQL. So, I’m wading through the installs today. Fun, fun. At least I’m doing something productive. It’s been a weird, slow week at work.

I’m actually starting to see improvements in my disc golf game. I’ve been playing a lot over the past two weeks or so, and I can see a lot of change in just that short time. I played in the weekly pick-up doubles game this morning with a bunch of REALLY good players. One team got within one stroke of the course record (-15) at Gulley Park. I flubbed more shots than the other six guys total, but I got off several nice drives, which is the weakest part of my game. My putting was about average for the group, but I think a few of them were having off days, which skewed the average in my favor. I think playing with people who are so good is helping my game. Plus, nearly all the players around here are very supportive and full of (mostly) good advice. I’m really enjoying disc golf.

WebReview.com: This Old Blog. Several articles with some neat ideas for additional features for blog-based websites. I haven’t read all the articles, yet, but I’m looking for new ideas for this site.
As you can see, I’m working on revamping this place a little. I’m not at all happy with the current blue and white scheme, but at least it’s a little different than the previous version, which I’m tired of. Stay tuned for more changes.

It’s “Incredible Shrinking Staff” week at work. It’s down to just me and my semi-assistant/updater. January 1st, we had me (doing all the design, programming, db development — which six months before that had been done by two people), two updaters, an online editor, and a sales/marketing person. So, I’ve taken on a lot of the web editor’s duties, including dealing with all of our out-of-house content. It’s not a bad job, but not on top of my three other jobs! I hope they have a hiring thaw (the opposite of hiring freeze, right?) SOON, especially since I found a good candidate for the job. I thought the dot.bomb implosion had missed those of us out here in the hinterlands. At least this makes me semi-indispensible now… I hope.

37FAKEBANK by 37signals. Does your online banking interface suck? Mine does. The guys at 37signals hated theirs so much that they designed a prototype of their own. If more banks (and other ostensibly service-oriented businesses) spent more money on IA and user interface design, those banks would MAKE MORE MONEY off of the service (or spend less money on things like tellers, etc., which is the whole point of online banking, anyway, right?).
